Gieve Patel was born in 1940 in Bombay. He graduated in Medicine and is a General Practitioner. He is a self-taught artist, critic, playwriter and poet. His first one man show was held in 1966. The same year he published Poems, his first book of verse. In 1970, he wrote a play entitled Princes.A second collection of poems, How do you Withstand, Body was published in Bombay in 1976. he has participated in several exhibitions in India and abroad including Contemporary Indian Art, Royal Academy of Arts, London ( 1982 ), India : Myth and Reality - Aspects of Contemporary Indian Art, Museum of Modern Art, Oxford ( 1982 ), Contemporary Indian Art, Grey Art Gallery, New York ( 1986 ). His work has been shown at the Menton Biennale. He has also contributed to Young Commonwealth Poets, New Voices of the Commonwealth and PEN Asian Anthology.
